“It is a very friendly community. I came here, not knowing anybody. Just kind of meeting people, I was able to broaden my friend-group. But I also have a lot of people that now care about helping me better my life. I’m young. A lot of guys on the fire department are older than me. There’s a lot of the houses coming up for sale. Now that they know me, they’re kind of trying to get me into these houses just because they think I’d be a good fit. There’s just a lot of support in the community. There’s a lot of houses for rent in the community. Housing is very available here in town. Whatever you’re looking for…housing is very affordable.
Got into volunteering, joined the volunteer fire department and from there I was able to make a lot of different connections with people in the community. So, I’ve been at a lot of different events, volunteering my time. Even with my full-time job of police officer here, I try to stop in at all the high school sporting events, just show my face and try to get to know everybody. There’s not a lot of crime that goes on when you have the sheriff and the city police force that are patrolling this area.
“We moved to Fosston about ten years ago. I graduated from Physical Therapy School from the University of North Dakota in 2014, and Fosston provided an opportunity for me to get my career started.
The thing I love most about living in Fosston is the sense of community that exists here. I feel like the reason that we have opted to make Fosston our permanent home are the friendships that we’ve made.
We strongly feel that the school is helping our kids develop. The teachers really care. We see them in the grocery store and have a parent-teachers conference. We are talking to someone that we’re friends with.
If somebody was thinking about moving to Fosston, I would encourage them to do so without any hesitation at all. There isn’t a better community that I’ve lived in.
When we decided to move here, we decided to try it for five years. In that five years, we had no question, it was a foregone conclusion that we were staying. This town grabbed hold of us, and we can’t imagine living anywhere else.”
“I’m guessing that I was like a lot of high school seniors that had a calendar and checked every day off until their graduation and ready to move out of Fosston, and that’s what I did.
I went to school and I got a job in corporate America and because of those two things, I was able to travel all over the world. But what I missed in Fosston was freedom. I missed being free from traffic. I missed being free from congestion. I missed being free from alarms and sirens going off all night. I missed the freedom of smog. And I think what I missed the most was the freedom of being able to feel safe.
I missed the blue skies and the starry nights. I missed the smiles of familiar faces. I missed being able to wave at a stranger and knowing that they’re going to wave back at me.
I missed gravel roads and open fields. I missed being able to go for a walk in the woods and I think most of all I missed the lakes. I don’t care if it’s Poplar Lake or Lengby Lake or Leech Lake. I missed being able to jump into fresh, clean water.
That’s why I moved back to Fosston.“
“I enjoy being Mayor of Fosston, as this is my home town, born and raised here in Fosston. I left for a number of years and returned with my family when my children were still in school.
We have, of course, some very nice facilities here for youth as far as our recreational facilities, the Civic Center with swimming pool, our parks and softball field, and numerous other things for kids to do. So, that was the big attraction to our returning to Fosston.
I enjoy being Mayor, because, again, being my home town, I love to see the town grow and prosper. And, over my time as councilman and mayor, we’ve seen many new businesses locate in Fosston, industries providing numerous jobs, and also the addition of many new homes growing here in Fosston.
So, my goal as Mayor is to see Fosston grow and prosper and be a great place for families to live and raise their children.”
